Summary

WG2 on food safety policy and coordination is in the early stages of formation. Its work will support Outcome 2 of the Alliance’s work plan: ensuring countries have adequate legislative and policy support to create an enabling environment for multisectoral coordination and collaboration.

To achieve this outcome, the WG2 will prioritize knowledge translation of the economic burden of foodborne diseases. By generating and communicating evidence on the costs of foodborne disease, including impacts on vulnerable groups and national economies, the group will help build the case for investment. This, in turn, will provide the foundation for stronger policy frameworks and multisectoral coordination mechanisms at national level.

Highlights

  • Stronger policies start with stronger evidence: a new working group will turn data on the economic burden of foodborne diseases into action for safer food.
  • Building the business case for food safety: translating evidence into policies that protect health, support trade, and strengthen economies.
  • To achieve multisectoral collaboration on food safety, countries need policy support, and it starts with showing why investment matters.
