Behavioural and cultural insights
How we behave is essential for our health and well-being. Health behaviours – for example, being physically active, vaccinating or following a treatment plan – are affected by many interconnected factors, such as a person’s knowledge and motivation, as well as the social, cultural, structural and political context. WHO uses behavioural and cultural insights (BCI) to understand health behaviours, what drives them and what prevents them. This knowledge is valuable for developing more effective health policies, services and communication that are tailored to the needs and circumstances of people and communities.
